Phishing, pronounced like “fishing” (to fish), is precisely the type of scam through which criminals try to fish for your private data through the internet or telephone calls, in order to access your bank account or data. Never offer your personal data in a phone call or email message not initiated by you. If someone calls or writes to you requesting changes in your accesses, notify the institution immediately and verify the information.
Skimming scams are a bit more difficult to detect, since they usually involve some kind of electronic device that reads your credit or debit card in order to clone and use it without your authorization. When paying at an establishment, keep track of your card, and when using automatic teller machines, look closely at the area where you insert your card. If you notice something strange, do not use it. Scammers place “readers” in automatic teller machines, which allow them to steal your information.
Criminals are constantly renewing their methods, so the best defense is to stay alert and carefully check your bank and card account statements every month. If you notice anything strange, contact the banking institution immediately.
